Neo-noir: Modern filmmakers revising the film noir tradition

Drawing from the 1940s and 1950s tradition known as “film noir,” new generations of cinema artists have spun their own tales of inescapable fate, social and moral rot, crime and psychosis. Self-conscious and self-critical, these “neo-noir” works extend the formal innovations of their predecessors, transforming moody black and white to lurid color, weaving intricate non-linear narratives, and pulling identities from the margins—female, Black, queer—to the creative and visual centers of the stories.
