Israel and Palestine: 100 years of conflict and claim
The roots of the current conflict between Israelis and the Palestinians trace back to 1920. There have been periods of peace since, but the struggle of two peoples for the same piece of land has given rise to three major wars in the region. Since 1979, Israel has enjoyed an uneasy peace with its Arab neighbors, although the Palestinians’ striving for sovereignty has continued. Underlying this century-old clash are serious misunderstandings on each side as to the legitimacy of the opponent’s cause. This course will examine the source and evolution of the conflict and the claims of both peoples to their shared, disputed land. Finally it will address the question of whether a peaceful resolution is possible.
